Day 11: Mrs. Obama: tired of ‘angry black woman’ stereotype

A new book out by New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor chronicles presidential family life in “The Obamas.” The book, however, is catching some news cycle attention for its portrayal of First Lady Michelle Obama as a woman that sometimes aggressively and abrasively involves herself with White House staffers. The attention on the passages inspired Mrs. Obama to comment on the issue during a recent interview with CBS News. Mrs. Obama addresses stereotypes around black women in the interview, a recent topic on the The Colbert Report this week, when author and news contributor Melissa Harris-Perry appeared on the show. Harris-Perry is the author of a new book, “Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America.” Her comments found here, along with the First Lady’s, mold beautifully to introduce the topic of stereotypes and black women in the media and amongst undereducated folks across the country.
